Cars of the future will drive at night with main-beam headlamps on all the time, but never dazzle another vehicle. That’s the vision of American component firm Gentex, which already makes the auto-dipping lights on the current BMW 7-series. Its engineers are working on a new technology called Dynamic Forward Lighting (DFL) which features a single main beam that floods the road with light.
The facelifted VW Jetta is now on sale in the UK
The Volkswagen Jetta – a VW Golf with a boot – is getting a bit of a facelift for 2015 (although you’d be hard-pushed to see the changes) and now, after its reveal at the New York Motor Show in April, it’s going on sale in the UK. Although the cosmetic changes to the Jetta are minor – the usual tweaks to the back and front, including a revised grill – VW claim the small changes it’s made result in a Jetta that’s ten per cent more aerodynamic (which makes you wonder why they didn’t do it earlier). The visual changes inside are just as minor, with a new steering wheel, new trims and new fabric options, with ambient lighting fitted to the Jetta GT.
A new performance-oriented 335iS model endowed with an M-sport styling kit and unique chassis settings heads the list of changes BMW brings to its facelifted 2011 3-series coupe and convertible. Set to slot into the lineup between an upgraded 335i and the M3 when it goes on sale in March as an exclusive for North America, the 335iS runs a tuned version of BMW's N54 engine, as found in the recently unveiled Z4 sDrive35iS, coupled to either a standard six-speed manual or an optional Getrag-engineered seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine of the 335iS adds a special software package to bump power to 326 hp and lift torque to 332 lb-ft--or to an even gutsier 369 lb-ft for short periods via an overboost function that unleashes added turbocharger boost pressure.
